This artificial skin has some characteristics similar to those of the human skin with the ability to sense the contact pressure, the localization of the pressure field, the shape and orientation of the object in contact. Its structure can be rigid or flexible depending by the application. An innovative aspect of the technological solution proposed is the low cost of the components used, the conformance of the skin to the objects in contact and, from the structural point of view, the high robustness. It is possible to have a low contact threshold similar to that human and at the same time, it can be measured also a considerable range of applied forces. The spatial resolution is modifiable depending by the necessities. In the specific case of hand prostheses, for example, it is fundamental that the artificial sensing skin mimics the (external) characteristics of the human skin system since the prosthesis should appear as much as possible similar to the real limb, and at the same time, it should give the feeling, during contact, of a consistency similar to that one of the human skin.
